City Lights

Bright lights in a very big city, so it's impressive that he managed to pick his hostel out of the skyline I think.

Jay tells me in the postcard about how cramped his accommodation was, the busy pace of the city and how space is a premium.  And he fit the contents of an entire letter onto the back of the postcard with cramped and tiny writing so I actually felt slightly claustrophobic after reading it and could completely relate to his experience.

That's why I love getting postcards, you can visit somewhere without ever going.

Emerald Isle

I meant to do a post for St Patricks Day, but I met friends, went to the parade, was too tired when I came home and then just plain forgot.  Oops!

 Beannachtai Lá le Pádraig oraibh!
Happy St Patricks Day everyone!

Day Tripper

It seems no one can visit Liverpool without doing The Beatles tour.
And who can blame them, The Beatles rock!

Warm Seas

When friends are headed for warmer climes I ask for a postcard that I can soak up the sunshine from and my friend Denise has a real knack of picking those that not only contain the most sunshine but also provoke the largest amount of jealousy.

Beautiful places with blue skies, warm seas and white sands, it's a real sign that a postcard and its sender have done their jobs right when you finish reading and are green with envy.

Better Late Than Never

I asked for a postcard that featured work by artist Cesar Manrique when my sisters friend told me she was headed on holiday to Lanzarote, one the Canary Islands.

Despite promises that she sent one, none arrived, and I was sure that she had forgotten and was blaming the postal service.  So when it finally turned up 6 months later (yes folks - 6 months later) I owed her a big apology.  Sorry!

Sugar Duck

When in secondary school I had a French pen pal who I met though an exchange our schools organised to improve our language skills.  Céline and I became good friends and remained pen pals for many years, visiting each other on occassion and still exchange Christmas cards today.

During one of my visits I discovered the French endearment "Bonjour mon Petit Canard en Sucre" which translates as "Hello, my Little Sugar Duck" and used it constantly so Céline began to send me duck themed postcards during our correspondence.

Here's a little selection of the super cute petit canard postcards she sent over the years.

Promises, Promises

My brother has done his fair share of travelling and has covered a large portion of the globe, visiting out of the way places like Borneo and Nepal.

And everytime he goes somewhere he promises faithfully that he will send me a postcard, but never does.

The only postcard I've ever received from him is one that he found in his bag when unpacking and so delivered by hand.  In his defense he had bought it and written it, which was a major achievement, but never got around to posting it.

But it's not the thought that counts anymore Ronan - just send me a postcard would you!

From Ronan when in Stockholm, Sweden - no idea when as there's no postmark!

Handsome Fella

How much fun is this handsome fella having!

Such joy in his laughter, you surely can't help but smile when you look at him.  I know I can't.

Pretty Lady

Would you just look at this sweetheart, isn't she just the epitome of innocence?

I love this postcard, there's something so pure about it, unposed and natural, she's a real pretty lady.
